Natural Dye: Native Australian Indigo (Indigofera australis)
Indigo, of varying species, has been utilised as a natural textile dye for centuries. Derived from the leaves of the plant, indigo dye has a deep cultural significance across various cultures worldwide. It is one of the most ancient dye colours, with its usage dating back to ancient civilisations such as Egypt, India, and Japan, where it was used not only as a dye for textiles but also as a pigment for painting and decorating manuscripts, temples, and other artefacts.
Artist Notes: In addition to its ornamental value, Austral Indigo (Indigofera australis) holds significance as a source of natural dye. Historically, indigo dyes derived from plants like Indigofera have been prized for their deep cool hues, utilised in textiles and other crafts. We planted the native indigo in our yard about 2 years ago and was excited to see it was ready to use as dye this season. The light sage green colour was extracted using a cold dye process with ice.
